Gregory Nussen (they/he)
Gregory Nussen is a cultural critic, performance artist, film programmer and filmmaker from Los Angeles. A multi-disciplinary artist, their work is realized at the nexus of leftist politics, meta-theatrics and the space between forms.
Their critical analysis has been published in Deadline, Slant Magazine, In Review Online, Salon, Bright Lights Film Journal, Vague Visages, Knock-LA, The Servant, Boing Boing, IfNotNow and on their Substack. They were awarded the graduate student prize for criticism in 2022 by the New York Film Critics Circle. They regularly blog on Letterboxd. As a programmer, Gregory has worked for the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), HollyShorts Film Festival (HSFF), AFI Fest and Brooklyn Film Festival. In 2020, they began Quarantine Film Club (QFC), a series of films that reflect the political moment, which often includes panel conversations with artists and academics.
Amongst their film projects is The Eulogist, which was a finalist at the Barnstorm Fest; The Parents, a comedic web series with Caroline Lindy about an aging Jewish couple, and This Is Supposed To Make You Happy, a surrealist comedy about a group of friends in search of calm, currently in post-production. They directed their wife, Hannah Pilkes, in her solo debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, and directed singer/songwriter Emma Jayne in her storytelling hour Songs To My Inner Child.
As a performer, Gregory has worked off-Broadway, regionally and abroad, with Classic Stage Company, the Phoenix Theatre Company, Theatre of NOTE, Piehole, Theatre West, and others. Their last solo show premiered off-Broadway at Theater for the New City.
As an educator, they have presented papers at the Association for Adaptation Studies, in Birmingham, UK, are an adjunct professor at Palomar College and have been a teaching artist with Columbia University, in addition to independent online courses. They have had films premiere at South By Southwest (SXSW), The UK Jewish Film Festival and Barnstorm. They earned their MA from New York University, their MFA from Columbia University and their BA from Emerson College, with additional years spent at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade (UCB) and the Groundlings.They’d love it if you sent them a message.
